grinding
What Your Jaw Does While You're Asleep
A reflex stops you biting through your own teeth. It switches off when you sleep — which is how people crack molars and wake up blaming stress for a headache.
Try to bite as hard as you possibly can right now. Something stops you well before your teeth are in danger — a reflex loop between the tooth roots and the jaw muscles that reads pressure and pulls the brakes.
That loop is dialed down while you sleep.
Which is why the forces people generate grinding at 3am go beyond anything they could produce awake and on purpose. There’s no brake, no pain feedback, and no memory of it afterwards:
At night I grind my teeth during the day I clench my jaws I don’t even notice it r/Anxiety
It doesn’t feel like damage, it feels like a bad morning
Nobody wakes up thinking my jaw did 40 minutes of hard labor. They wake up with something they blame on something else.
I just started clenching. Now I wake up with some awesome headaches. I hate it here. r/Anxiety
The headache is the temporalis muscle, which runs up the side of your skull and is one of the muscles doing the clenching. Overwork it all night and it aches like any other overworked muscle — except it’s attached to your head, so it reads as a headache and gets treated as one.
The rest of the tells are just as easy to misfile: a jaw that’s tired before you’ve spoken to anyone, teeth that suddenly react to cold, a molar that’s tender to bite on for no reason at all.
Yep, I wear a mouth guard to prevent damage. I’ve sprained a tooth more than once from clenching. r/Anxiety
Sprained a tooth. Teeth sit in ligament, not concrete, and that ligament can be strained like any other.
Where the anxiety link comes from
It isn’t a coincidence that these quotes all come from the same place. Sleep grinding happens in clusters, tied to brief arousals — moments where the brain surfaces toward wakefulness without waking. Stress increases how often those happen. So grinding tracks bad weeks.
i clench my jaw during the day and grind the fuck out of my teeth every night. lots of teeth and jaw problems. r/Anxiety
Daytime clenching is a different habit with a different fix — it’s conscious, so it responds to catching yourself. Night grinding doesn’t, because you’re not there.
The guard protects the teeth. It doesn’t stop the grinding.
This is the part people get wrong. A night guard is a sacrificial layer. The jaw still does the work; the plastic takes it instead of enamel.
I ground through my clear retainer from so much grinding at night. I recommend a night guard. r/Anxiety
Read that again — she ground through a retainer. That’s what would have been happening to her molars. And people do find it worth it:
same! i got an occlusal guard (aka night guard) from my dentist and it’s been amazing! I get it out during the day when the clenching is bad also r/Anxiety
Worth knowing: a guard bought off a shelf that doesn’t fit properly can make clenching worse by giving the jaw something satisfying to bite into. This is one of the few places where the dentist-made version genuinely earns the difference.
The damage nobody addresses
Grinding does two things to a tooth, and the guard only handles one.
It wears the surface flat — the biting surfaces lose their ridges and go shiny. And it flexes the tooth near the gum line, which chips away at the enamel exactly where it’s thinnest. That’s where the cold sensitivity comes from: enamel gone, dentin exposed, tiny channels running straight to the nerve.
That surface needs putting back, and the guard does nothing for it. CariSpray does — nano-hydroxyapatite is the mineral enamel is built from, small enough to settle into the worn surface and into the open channels that cause the sensitivity. It sprays on and stays on, no rinsing, which makes it the right thing to use last thing at night: it goes on before the guard, and it’s still working through the hours when saliva has stopped and the jaw is doing its worst.
Protect the tooth from the force, rebuild the surface the force already took. You want both.
The short version
The reason night grinding wrecks teeth isn’t that people grind harder than they realize. It’s that the mechanism designed to stop them is off duty.
You’re not there to feel it. Your teeth are.
Questions people actually ask
How do I know if I grind my teeth at night?
You mostly don't — it's silent for many people. The tells are morning headaches at the temples, a tired jaw on waking, flat shiny patches on the biting surfaces, and new cold sensitivity.
Does a night guard stop grinding?
No. It stops the damage by giving the jaw something else to destroy. The grinding continues, which is why the guard wears out — that wear would have been your enamel.
Why does anxiety cause teeth grinding?
Sleep bruxism clusters around brief arousals during the night, and stress raises how often those happen. It's one reason grinding gets worse in bad weeks and eases in calm ones.
